Inter-Library Loan & Open Borrowing

Inter-Library Loan

Libraries throughout New Jersey, the country, and even around the world participate in lending materials to patrons in other libraries. This means that in Riverdale, if we don’t have what you want, we will look for it in other libraries in Main, then in New Jersey and even across the entire country!

Open Borrowing

Open Borrowing is a program where libraries in Morris, Passaic, Sussex, and parts of Warren, Union, Monmouth, Hudson, Essex, and Somerset Counties agree to recognize cards from other systems for reciprocal borrowing in person. Over 150 towns in the 10 county area participate.

Please be aware that if you borrow a book in another county you must return it to a participating library in that county.

Book Buggy Homebound Service

What is the Book Buggy?

If you are a Riverdale resident unable to travel to the Library, you are eligible for our Book Buggy service. With our Book Buggy, a volunteer will deliver books, audio books, magazines, and movies right to your door! Give us a call and a librarian will help you select books or other items that match your interests. Deliveries and pick-ups are available once a week. All normal borrowing policies apply, though we will adjust our borrowing periods to adapt to your delivery schedule. Items delivered by Book Buggy are exempt from overdue fines.

How Does It Work?

Volunteers from the Friends of the Riverdale Public Library will personally deliver books to your door if you are not able to travel to the library because of either a permanent or temporary disability. All drop-offs and pickups will be arranged with you ahead of time by phone.

Who Is Eligible?

Anyone who has a valid library card from the Riverdale Public Library and is in good standing (If you don’t already have one, we can arrange for a library card by mail).

How to Sign Up for the Book Buggy
